Tools for Humanity's activities in Brazil have been stopped by the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) because of worries about how financial incentives may affect user consent. Argentina is also looking into claims of data-buying associated with the initiative.

The proof-of-humanity biometric ID project, Sam Altman's World, is fighting Brazilian regulators. Brazil's privacy watchdog, the National Privacy Protection Authority, banned the initiative from providing benefits for consumers to sign up for its platform.

According to the organization, providing any kind of payment for the exchange of personal information would be against the terms and concerns defined by regional laws.

Consent for Sensitive Data

Authority stated:

“Consent must be free of charge, informed, clear, and given in an obvious and visible way for particular purposes before storing sensitive personal data, including biometric data.”

In this regard, the ANPD pointed out that financial incentives provided by the business can limit people's ability to freely express their will by shaping their choice to provide their biometric information, particularly when risk and lacking make the offered payment even more significant.

Issued on January 25, the law is currently in force. This is just one protective step; if the institution thinks about it, others may follow. The world's creator, tools for Humanity, rejected these claims and stated that they matched all Brazilian laws and rules.

Collaboration with ANPD

The company said, “We are in communication with the ANPD and are positive that we can cooperate with them to guarantee that all Brazilians can continue to take full use of the World network.”

The ANPD said last week that it was in the analytical stages of a World inquiry and that the investigation might lead to preventive actions.

In November, World began operations in the nation, setting up eye-scanning stations in ten different São Paulo regions. According to the startup, it has over 150,000 registered users nationwide and offers prizes in WLD, its cryptocurrency.

Newsstand Operator Was Enquired About Crypto Iris Scans

A newsstand operator in the city of Zapala is also under investigation by Argentine authorities for reportedly paying customers about $20 for iris scans related to the disputed World Coin project. The police and a consumer rights prosecutor have opened independent investigations into the situation, according to local media site Río Negro.

A person inside the newsstand was using it as an office with a computer and paying individuals to give their biometric information.

The incident began when a woman told a local radio station that cryptocurrency was being exchanged for personal information at the kiosk. It appeared that the operator was purchasing biometric information and employing a foreign company for scanning.

According to Argentine laws, biometric information is considered sensitive and can only be collected and processed in certain special situations. Authorities are looking into the possibility of data protection laws by the operator and any related businesses.
